Volunteer Tutor Job Description ...
ROLE:
To help an adult non-reader acquire reading, writing, speaking, listening,
numeracy, and other life skills needed to function successfully in society.
This is usually done through a one-to-one relationship which emphasizes
personal attention.
PLACE OF TUTORING:
Literacy office, or any mutual agreeable public location, i.e. community centre, church, school, library. (Arranged by the Literacy Society.)
HOURS:
Twice weekly if possible, one to two hours each lesson. Preparation time will vary depending on the students level and the suggestions in the learning plan.
Responsibilities to the Student
Meet the student at the time and place agreed on by both parties and previously arranged through the student/tutor coordinator
Notify the office if the tutoring appointment has to be cancelled or changed at least one hour before the meeting time
Set an example by being punctual and courteous
Become familiar with the learning plan that has been designed by the student/tutor coordinator
Prepare lessons and material ahead of time
Become familiar with the library resources in the office
Encourage and support the student in developing a positive self-image and enthusiasm for learning
Use materials from your experience and work skills to enhance your literacy lessons
Listen to the student and respond to their needs which may be a personal problem that is interfering with their literacy learning
Maintain confidientiality
Inform the coordinator if any problems in tutoring or the student-tutor relationship arise
Responsbilities to the Literacy Society
Keep accurate records of hours tutored and student progress
Report hours and progress on the form provided by the 5th day of each month
Attend professional development events offered by the Society and its literacy partners
Renew annual membership with the Literacy Society
Notify the office if tutoring terminates
Keep in touch with the Literacy Society and share ideas that will benefit the Society and/or your own student
Keep yourself up to date by reading the newsletter and attending literacy events
